| The Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (PEOPIL) was founded in 1996 and formally established as a not-for-profit organisation in 1998 by European lawyers to improve and promote judicial co-operation and mutual knowledge of legal and judicial systems of European jurisdictions in the field of personal injury law. The development and expansion of PEOPIL is based upon recognition that the issues involved in personal injury litigation frequently extend beyond the national boundaries and require an international perspective and knowledge.
The impact of EC legislation on personal injury law is growing steadily and this creates a need for knowledge of European legislation and a basic understanding of the Member States legislation in this field. Currently the Pan-European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers has 550 members from 27 jurisdictions within the European Union, 11 Non-European Union jurisdictions within Europe and 6 jurisdictions outside Europe. Membership is open to legal professionals (lawyers, judges), academics and law students. |
The following is a breakdown of PEOPIL’s core activities and objectives: PEOPIL participates in the development of EU legislation: PEOPIL formulated written submissions in response to the European Commission Green Papers on Liability for defective products, Legal Aid and on compensation to crime victims and was invited by the European Commission to participate in the hearings regarding the above papers. Other more recent submissions include “Peopil Response to Working Document on the Council Directive 90/314/Eec 13 June 1990 On Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours”; Determining The Competent Court And What Law To Apply In Cases Of Civil Wrongs: The Case Of Road Traffic Accidents” On 2 December 2008 On Behalf Of Peopil At The European Parliament. |

Special Interest Groups PEOPIL has established so called European Exchange Groups that deal with more specialist legal issues. The following groups have been established: Aviation EEG, Medical Negligence EEG, Road Traffic and Whiplash EEG, Occupational Health EEG and Tourism EEG. PEOPIL also runs a so called Tort Reform Group that monitors European and national legislation and an Academic Committee that is responsible for producing new publications to facilitate the daily work of practionoers across Europe. |
